The Olympics are nearly here, and while we have been patiently waiting for the beach volley ball, synchronised swimming and the table tennis, we have been lucky enough to have other great sports events to keep us entertained. The live footage of Tour de France leaves you fantasizing about a relaxing and warm summer getaway to Europe while Andy Murray is left to fantasize about a finals victory.

Following on from the last two issues, where we looked at cars at auction with a $2000 budget, and then last month’s trawl through the best $4000-$5000 cars, this month we move up a level to $6000 - $8000.
Things get a bit tricky at this price range. Whereas with the cheaper cars you can perhaps afford to take a bit of a risk, this sort of money isn’t usually burning a hole in your pocket. It’s important to get cars in this price range checked over carefully and thoroughly by someone who knows their camshafts from their dif housings.
Again, all these cars have been chosen from the comfort of my desk without actually checking the cars out properly, so this exercise is strictly hypothetical.

If you’re after an older car in good nick then Christchurch seems to be the place to look. Despite the damage caused by earthquakes, there always seems to be some really tidy old beauties from yesteryear showing up at Turners down there. Two years on I’m still driving my exceptionally tidy twenty year old BMW that I bought there, and I came very close to buying a one owner, twenty year old Falcon wagon from there as well – and I don’t even like Falcon wagons, and I didn’t need another car, and I live in the North Island, it was just that good.

2010 Hyundai Getz 1.4 Auto 5 door hatch
The Getz has now been replaced in the Hyundai line up by the all new i20 but it still looks quite modern, if a little less stylish looking than the Barina. You get 4 airbags, ABS brakes, a decent stereo with MP3 compatibility, steering wheel mounted controls and air conditioning etc.
